The Smart Book For Parents

The Smart Book for Smart Parents

About The Book

One parenting size does not fit all children. As you go through this book and parenting, develop a bespoke style for each of your children, love them equally (no matter how hard an effort this may seem to be) regardless of their disposition and personality.

Changing our world and fixing our country begins with Parenting. Where the world is today is a function of parenting and the children we have raised over the past generations. Where our world will be in the coming years depends on the quality of parenting the children today also get.

One thing is clear, parenting is one of the key foundations on which society rests, and for parents, one that determines your legacy. When we raise children right, we leave a legacy that can last generations and we create hope for our society, as these children cause advancement in any area they focus on.

This is a timeless concept that is as old as humanity itself and yet unpredictable and no matter how desirous, one is never fully prepared for it. There is so much literature on parenting and I am pleased, no, I am proud to write the foreword on Oluwagbemileke’s book: The Smart Book for Parents. I guess this is borne out of the fact that he is a contemporary parent and a teacher. I have no doubts that the pages of the book and nuggets therein are based on the various experiences garnered in the past years.

I have noticed a trend that is quite worrisome. Fewer young people are attaining independence early in life. Some youth in their thirties are still being supported by their elderly parents or relations. ...With this book, you can start building a foundation to prevent this.

Hear from parents who read the book

I have spent the last 15 years of my life researching the subject of parenting across different cultures because parenting in my opinion is one of the greatest needs to reposition our society. This is one resource that is so easy to read and very engaging, but above all makes you question your blind spots and provides answers in your quest to becoming an exceptional parent. I am super impressed at the depth of your work, Leke. This is highly recommended to everyone who truly wants to become a better parent.  Praise Fowowe (The Institute of Family Engineering and Development)

One of the biggest challenges facing our world is absentee parents. The evolution of society into the equality of working fathers and working mothers have left the children in the care of care givers who themselves need care. Children are getting more phone time and more TV time than daddy and mummy time put together. This tips the scale on a need for a guide on parenting. It’s a matter of national and generational emergency. That is why this well-thought-out masterpiece by Leke Amoo needs to get into the hands of every parent. Some will argue that being a father or mother does not require any serious skillsets, but being parents does. I particularly like the fact that The Smart Book for Smart Parents is an easy read, blended with practical stories and offers the readers a variety of options to choose from for each module. This book is a compulsory guide for every parent. Adeolu Akinyemi, PEN (Pastor, Entrepreneur, Nation Builder)

One of the most feared assignments in this day and age is parenting. Speaking to many parents, one hears the concerns they have and very often the self-doubt about their ability to do right by their children. They often say they wish they had some sort of guide. A manual. This is what The Smart Book for Smart Parents has very succinctly provided. Candid, research-based and experiential thoughts and guidance to help parents from the heart of an exceptional teacher and parent. I have known the author, Leke Amoo, for many years and there are very few people who inspire me in the discharge of their duty as teachers. He is one of them. If you are looking for an easy to digest, yet richly-packed book, that gives you the tools and asks you to reflect, look no further.  Adeiye Oluwaseun-Sobo, The Intentional Teachers’ Network

Hmmm! This book is a gift from God and one that every parent should stay glued to. The wisdom here is so relatable on every level. I think of my 3-year-old daughter as I read about toddlers and I can relate to the older children’s needs as I go through those as well. This is a book many 21st Century parents would relate to and would love their contemporaries to read and learn from. It is laced with practicable ideas that will spark creativity in the mind of the reader – thus making them smart. I see myself on a journey to becoming a smart parent, thanks to The Smart Book for Smart Parents. I recommend that every parent who takes their children’s future seriously should read this book. It’s an enlightening book that one will have to pause at intervals to really digest and think through. While you won’t always agree with what Leke is saying, there’s a lot of food for thought that will make you consider carefully what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. I particularly looooove how Leke makes one see that this journey of parenting is one that only the Holy Spirit can help with. I have no doubt that this book will start a revolution and bless a lot of lives! Well done Hubby! Lois Leke-Amoo, Author, Diary of a Naija Toddler Mum

The Smart Book for
Smart Parents

Foreword

Parenting! Parenting!! Parenting!!!

Even with the complexities involved, parenting is an art that requires conscious and intentional effort by every parent in every family; the singular and most important person being the child – Q.E.D

Sadly, many parents, today, need to be reminded of this fact. The rate of neglect, abuse, emotional and psychological torment, indecent exposure, irrational displays, cruelty, domestic violence, maltreatment, neglect, … (the list is endless) of children these days is absolutely mortifying. As an educator, I came to the conclusion at some time in the course of my career that schools had an obligation to the students in their care to first educate their parents in the ‘art of parenting.’ That is why I think this book is timely and apt for this season.

Michael Grose, a former teacher with 15 years’ experience, founder of Parenting Ideas, and one of Australia’s leading parenting educators has the following to say about good parenting, which resonates with The Smart Book for Parents:

  • Good parenting involves a great deal of consistency and routine, which gives children a sense of control.
  • Good parenting focuses on developing independence in children, so redundancy becomes the aim for parents (This underpins Oluwagbemileke’s summary of the purpose of parenting).
  • Good parenting involves a style that considers children’s age and stage of development. That is, there is a match between expectations, discipline and resilience-building strategies and children’s developmental age.
  • Good parenting aims at socialising kids (although I always say that our children are not ‘kids’. A kid is the baby of a goat and an informal slang for child. I pray our children do not manifest the traits of a kid – goat). Parents provide children and young people with social scripts to enable them to negotiate their expanding social horizons. This social scripting helps them negotiate their online and offline worlds.
  • Good parenting develops a growth mindset in kids (children) rather than a mindset that says that a child’s intelligence is fixed. Parenting that develops a growth mindset links kids’(children’s) success to effort and strategy as opposed to purely recognising and developing natural ability.
  • Good parenting focuses on encouragement over praise, consequences over punishment and cooperation over obedience. This ensures parenting matches the times in which we live.
  • Good parenting insists that kids (children) help at home without being paid so that they learn to be givers, not takers.
  • Good parenting is nuanced to take into account children’s birth order, personality and gender differences. One parenting size doesn’t fit all kids (children).

According to the best available research the best parenting stye is an authoritative style which is a balance of firmness and nurturance. The outcomes are generally best for kids (children) in terms of academic success, mental health and good well-being when they are raised by parents that use an authoritative style.

Families work well when they are guided democracies or benign dictatorships. Someone should be in charge of a family, and it’s a good idea if it’s parents! How does your parenting look? What’s your family like?

The definition of good parenting – Parenting Ideas

  • How does your parenting look?
  • What is your family like?

These are questions that I urge you to reflect on and provide honest answers to as you go through the pages of the book. Provision of blank spaces is made at the end of each chapter for you to pen your thoughts and action plans. In the words of the author, “Don’t just think them in your head, write them down. If you need more room, feel free to ‘ask for extra sheet’ by slipping papers into the pages or inserting notes on PDF. This is a book you should consider keeping private.”

The twenty-five-chapter book starts with the type of school you want your child to attend and covers a range of topical issues, even to guiding and loving your children through challenges and recognising authority. You may discover these 25 chapters extending beyond this as you go through the pages of the book and find your thoughts leading you to other related, or maybe even unrelated, but peculiar issues with your child(ren). In which case, it would have been a worthwhile effort.

A final word! Remember, one parenting size does not fit all children. As you go through this book and parenting, develop a bespoke style for each of your children, love them equally (no matter how hard an effort this may seem to be) regardless of their disposition and personality and most importantly, remember you are only but a caregiver. You are accountable to the ultimate Parent, Giver of life, Author and Perfecter of our faith, the One who makes all things possible – God Almighty. Do not undertake the task of parenting without seeking Him and ensuring your children know Him at a very early age. It is my prayer and firm belief that He will steer the course of every parent reading this book and guide you on this journey to a most fulfilling and rewarding end.
