For some children, adult attention, even in the form of praise is punishment.

Yes. Being singled out (even for a few seconds) among others is embarrassing to them.
For instance, in my classroom, if I find a child being distracted while I’m teaching👨🏻🏫, I might use sarcasm and say ‘Well done Joe’. Others turn to look at Joe. He doesn’t want that kind of attention.
That’s all. His behaviour changes throughout the lesson. No need to shout 🗣or lose my head.🥴
