Effective Discipline

We need to see discipline from the child's perspective not ours. In some other cases, the strategy you employ might stop a certain challenging behaviour but trigger a new one. This calls for some deep thinking. Parents, we need to reflect on our practice with our children, just as we do on our jobs.

Dear parent,

A punishment is only effective when undesirable behaviour decreases.

We need to see discipline (and even rewards) from the child’s perspective not ours.

It’s simply a waste of effort and time to keep doing the same thing and getting no result over a long period of time.

You may decide to take away certain privileges from your child, but if the challenging behaviour still continues then it means your form of discipline isn’t effective. You may beat or shout or send Junior to his room or tell Kemi to face the wall, but if all that doesn’t create a positive change in behaviour then something is wrong with the strategy(ies) you’re using.

In some other cases, the strategy you employ might stop a certain challenging behaviour but trigger a new one. This calls for some deep thinking.

Parents, we need to reflect on our practice with our children, just as we do on our jobs. May God give us wisdom daily as we lead our children through life.

Yours in the journey,

Leke Amoo
